You close your eyes, drift off, and wake up several hours later.
It feels like nothing happened in between.
But your brain and body have actually been busy the entire time.
While you're asleep, your brain moves through different stages of sleep in a repeating pattern. Your breathing and heart rate change, your muscles relax, your brain processes information, and your body gets time to repair and recover.
This repeating pattern is called the sleep cycle.
What Is a Sleep Cycle?
Sleep isn't one single state. It consists of four stages that are divided into two main types:
NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep, which includes stages 1, 2, and 3.
REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is the fourth stage.
You typically move through NREM sleep before entering REM sleep. After REM, the cycle starts again.
One complete cycle usually lasts around 90 to 120 minutes, although the length can vary. Most adults go through several cycles during a full night's sleep.
Also, the cycles aren't identical throughout the night.
You tend to spend more time in deep sleep earlier in the night, while REM periods generally become longer toward morning.
This is what happens during each stage:
Stage 1: NREM 1 — The Transition Into Sleep

This is the moment you're drifting off.
NREM 1 is the lightest stage of sleep and usually lasts only a few minutes. Your muscles begin to relax, your heartbeat and breathing may slow slightly, and your brain activity starts to change.
You're still relatively easy to wake during this stage.
You may also experience those strange little muscle twitches that sometimes happen just as you're falling asleep. Some people even feel like they're suddenly falling.
So if you've ever jolted awake thinking you were falling off a cliff when you were actually perfectly safe in bed, your brain may have been making the transition into sleep.
Stage 2: NREM 2 — Light Sleep Gets Deeper

After the initial transition, you move into NREM 2.
You're now properly asleep, although this is still considered a relatively light stage compared with deep sleep.
Several things happen during NREM 2:
Your body temperature decreases.
Your heart rate and breathing slow down.
Your muscles become more relaxed.
Your brain activity changes, including brief bursts known as sleep spindles.
Your body becomes less responsive to what's happening around you.
NREM 2 also takes up a large portion of your total sleep time, making it the stage you'll spend the most time in during a typical night.
This means you're fully asleep, your body is settling down, and your brain is still doing important work.
Stage 3: NREM 3 — Deep Sleep

This is the deep sleep part.
NREM 3 is the deepest stage of NREM sleep and is sometimes called slow-wave sleep because the brain produces slow, high-amplitude waves.
During this stage, your breathing and heart rate are slower, your muscles are deeply relaxed, and you're much harder to wake.
Deep sleep is especially important for physical restoration. Your body uses this time for processes involved in tissue repair, recovery, and immune function.
It's also associated with important aspects of learning and memory.
This is one reason getting enough total sleep matters. Cutting several hours from your night doesn't simply mean losing “sleep time”. It can change how much time you spend in different stages.
Stage 4: REM Sleep — When the Brain Gets Busy

REM stands for rapid eye movement, and the name comes from the quick movements of your eyes beneath your closed eyelids.
REM sleep is quite different from deep sleep.
This is when your brain becomes highly active, with brain activity that can resemble patterns seen during wakefulness. Your eyes move rapidly, your breathing and heart rate can become more variable, and vivid dreams are particularly common.
At the same time, most of your major skeletal muscles become temporarily inactive. This is called muscle atonia, and it helps prevent you from physically acting out most of your dreams.
REM sleep is also involved in processes related to learning, memory, and emotional processing.
Another interesting detail is REM periods generally become longer as the night goes on.
That's why a dream you remember after waking in the morning may feel incredibly detailed or bizarre.
How Do the Four Stages Fit Together?
Your body doesn't simply go from stage 1 to stage 2 and so on.
This is what a simplified sleep cycle looks like:
NREM 1 → NREM 2 → NREM 3 → lighter sleep → REM → repeat
You then begin another cycle.
However, the amount of time spent in each stage changes from cycle to cycle.
Earlier in the night, you generally spend more time in deep NREM sleep. Later in the night, REM periods become longer.
So even though you're asleep for the same number of hours, the sleep you're getting at 1 a.m. isn't necessarily identical to the sleep you're getting at 6 a.m.
Why Do You Sometimes Wake Up Feeling Foggy?
Have you slept for what felt like a long time and still woken up feeling like your brain hasn't loaded yet?
You're not imagining it.
The way you feel after waking can be influenced by factors including how much sleep you got, how often your sleep was interrupted, and which stage of sleep you woke from.
Waking from deep sleep can sometimes cause sleep inertia, a temporary period of grogginess and reduced alertness.
That doesn't mean deep sleep is bad. Deep sleep is important. It simply means that waking suddenly from certain stages can make the transition from sleeping to being fully alert feel rough.
What Happens If Your Sleep Is Interrupted?
Imagine your body is moving through its normal sleep stages, but you're repeatedly waking up because of stress, an uncomfortable room, a baby crying, a noisy neighbour or something else.
You may still spend a lot of time in bed, but your sleep isn't as continuous.
Repeated interruptions can affect how your body moves through its normal sleep pattern and may leave you feeling tired or unrefreshed the next day.
That's why sleep quality matters alongside sleep quantity.
Eight hours of highly fragmented sleep may not leave you feeling the same as eight hours of relatively uninterrupted sleep.
