At its core, public health is all about prevention of diseases, protection of the public and promotion of healthy choices.

What Is Public Health?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines public health as all organized measures (public or private) to prevent disease, promote health, and prolong life for the population as a whole, focusing on creating conditions for people to be healthy rather than treating individuals.

Simply put, public health is about people working together to keep everyone healthy. It focuses on preventing health problems before they start by supporting whole communities and populations.

This includes:

• Preventing the spread of infectious diseases [vaccinations]

• Provision of clean drinking water

• Access to healthy food

• Teaching people how to stay safe and healthy through awareness campaigns.

• Ensuring clean air and safe living environments

Reducing health inequalities across social groups.

Key Areas Of Public Health

1. Epidemiology

Epidemiology literally means the “study of what is upon the people”[ Wikipedia ]. This area focuses on studying how diseases spread, who they affect, and why they happen. By observing the patterns and cause of illness, epidemiology helps prevent outbreaks and protects the public.

2. Biostatistics

Biostatistics is a branch of statistics that applies statistical methods to a wide range of topics in the biological sciences, with a focus on clinical medicine and public health applications[Wikipedia]. Meaning, biostatistics uses numbers and data to understand health trends. It helps public health professionals make sense of research, track diseases, and decide what actions will best improve people’s health.

3. Health Policy and Management

This area involves creating and running systems that make health care work efficiently. Such as healthcare programs, laws, and public services. It helps ensure resources are used wisely and care is accessible to everyone.

4. Health Education

Health education helps people understand how to take care of their health and make healthier choices. It includes teaching about topics like nutrition, physical activity, mental well-being, disease prevention, and safe practices. By giving people clear and trustworthy information, health education empowers individuals and communities to live healthier, safer lives.

5. Mental Health

Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community [ WHO ]. Public health works to reduce stigma, improve access to mental health services, and promote supportive environments where people can feel safe, understood, and cared for.

6. Environmental Health

Environmental health focuses on the places where we live, work, and spend our time at. Clean air, safe drinking water, healthy housing, and protection from pollution all help prevent illness and support healthier lives.

7. Community Health

Community health focuses on working directly with people where they live, learn, and work. It addresses local health needs, promotes healthy habits, and builds strong support systems within communities.

8. Child and Maternal Health

Healthy mothers and children are the foundation of healthy societies. Public health ensures mothers and babies are healthy before, during, and after pregnancy. It includes access to prenatal care, safe childbirth, vaccinations, nutrition, and support for early childhood development.

Importance Of Public Health

Public Health matters because each and every single individual's life matters. They make up the society and a pandemic or environmental disaster shouldn't have to be our reminder.

Strong public health systems:

• Lower the cost of health care.

• Rapid and effective response to emergencies.

• Protect the vulnerable population. This included children, the elderly, people with disabilities and many more).

• Promote health awareness and lifestyle to the public.

Simple actions like vaccinations, health campaigns, smoking restrictions and emergency drills have saved millions of lives, all thanks to public health efforts.

How You can Help:
